FRANCESCO PIEMONTESI

A pianist endowed with exceptional interpretative finesse combined with solid technical qualities, Francesco Piemontesi is acclaimed for his approach to the Mozart and early Romantic repertoire. His pianism and sensitivity also lead him to have great affinity with the late 19th and 20th century repertoire.

Francesco Piemontesi appears worldwide alongside renowned conductors such as Zubin Mehta, Iván Fischer, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Gianandrea Noseda, Marek Janowski, Sir Mark Elder, Manfred Honeck, Sakari Oramo, Pablo Heras-Casado, Andrew Manze, and Sir Roger Norrington, and with major orchestras including the London Symphony, Philharmonia, Budapest Festival Orchestra, Czech Philharmonic, Bavarian Radio Symphony, Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig, Munich Philharmonic, Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, Vienna Symphony, Oslo Philharmonic, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Orchestre National de France, Orchestre de Paris, Los Angeles Philharmonic, NHK Symphony, and Chamber Orchestra of Europe. Also very active in chamber music, Francesco Piemontesi collaborates with important artists such as Leif Ove Andsnes, Yuri Bashmet, Renaud and Gautier Capuçon, Emmanuel Pahud, Heinrich Schiff, Christian Tetzlaff, Tabea Zimmermann, and the Emerson Quartet.

In recent seasons, Francesco Piemontesi has performed the complete cycle of Mozart’s piano sonatas at Wigmore Hall and appeared in prestigious halls and festivals such as Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Philharmonie Berlin, Tonhalle Zurich, Konzerthaus and Musikverein Vienna, Carnegie Hall New York, Suntory Hall Tokyo, Salzburg Festival, Verbier Festival, Edinburgh International Festival, La Roque d’Anthéron, Lucerne Festival, Easter Festival Aix-en-Provence, Rheingau, and Mostly Mozart Festival New York.

Current season events include debuts with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Manze, National Symphony Orchestra and Noseda, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and Norrington, as well as returns to the Orchestra of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia with Pappano, Oslo Philharmonic with Janowski, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic with Koopman, NDR Radiophilharmonie and Scottish Chamber Orchestra with Manze, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France with Metzmacher, and Konzerthausorchester Berlin with Inbal.

In August 2018, Francesco Piemontesi performed at Schubertiade, Salzburg Festival, and Schleswig-Holstein Festival. Other events during the season include recitals at Queen Elizabeth Hall London, Lincoln Center New York, and Herbst Theatre San Francisco.

In 2018 Francesco Piemontesi released a CD with music by Liszt, combined with a DVD containing a documentary by French director Bruno Monsaingeon on the Années de pèlerinage (Orfeo). His previous recordings include Mozart piano concertos nos. 25 and 26 with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Andrew Manze (Linn); for Naïve he recorded Debussy preludes, Mozart solo piano works, and Schumann and Dvořák piano concertos with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Jiří Bělohlávek. Born in Locarno, Francesco Piemontesi studied with Arie Vardi, later perfecting himself with Alfred Brendel, Murray Perahia, Cécile Ousset, and Alexis Weissenberg. He gained international recognition by winning several prizes in major piano competitions, including the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 2007 and the appointment as BBC New Generation Artist from 2009 to 2011.

Since 2012 he has been the Artistic Director of the Settimane Musicali di Ascona Festival.
