Bergamo, November 27, 2004 – The Cav. Lav. Carlo Pesenti have come together.
The inauguration ceremony was held at the Teatro Donizetti in the presence of key representatives of the industrial, economic-financial, political, and institutional communities at both national and local levels.
Promoting research, ethics, and culture to spread the principles and values of sustainable business development—this is the mission of the Foundation, as outlined by Giampiero Pesenti, Chairman of Italcementi, and Giovanni Giavazzi, President of the newly founded Foundation.
“Italcementi and Italmobiliare wanted to create this Foundation dedicated to my father,” said Giampiero Pesenti, “to support education and scientific research, with a focus on sustainable development in relation to business activities.“
Carlo Pesenti (1907–1984) was one of the leading industrial and financial figures in post-war Italy. The son of Augusto—one of the six Pesenti brothers who founded the company “Fratelli Pesenti fu Antonio”—Carlo represented the third generation in the entrepreneurial history of the Pesenti family.
Development and Innovation
“Development and innovation: these are still the guiding principles that inspire us 140 years after the birth of our industrial activity. A long journey that has involved five generations of my family; from 1864, when the Società Bergamasca per la Fabbricazione del Cemento e della Calce Idraulica was founded, later incorporated into Fratelli Pesenti fu Antonio.”
To achieve its objectives, the Foundation—currently led by Giovanni Giavazzi (President) and Giampiero Pesenti (Vice President)—will operate in collaboration with private and public organizations in Italy and abroad.
The creation of a Foundation
“The creation of a Foundation like the one we are presenting today,” emphasized Giovanni Giavazzi, “is intended as a tribute to our group’s tradition and a stimulus for the future. It reflects a legacy of sensitivity and involvement that continues today—ranging from social support to promotion, from culture to research, from social to structural needs of the territory. The birth of the Foundation is a sign of confidence, an expression of hope, and also an assumption of responsibility.“
Established as an independent, non-profit institution, the Foundation will support scientific research and technological innovation aimed at the economic and social development of the territory.
Board of Directors
The Board of Directors, upon proposal by the President, may appoint a Scientific Committee to support its activities.
“In fact, the responsibility imposed by sustainable development presents a new challenge for businesses, different in nature and complexity from those of the past,” noted Carlo Pesenti, CEO of Italcementi, during the presentation.
“There is a growing need to respect the ‘triple bottom line’ of sustainable development, which includes not only profitability but also social development and environmental responsibility.
In this sense, business growth must aim for an industrial development that, while meeting the needs of the present, safeguards the social, economic, and environmental prospects of future generations.“
