Fondazione Pesenti stands alongside Doctors with Africa CUAMM, supporting activities related to the School for Midwives in Bossangoa, in the Central African Republic.
The Bossangoa Hospital, at the heart of this initiative, is located approximately 300 km from the country’s capital, Bangui. The hospital has 130 beds and serves as the main healthcare facility for around 286,000 people living in the area. In 2024, the facility assisted 1,185 births, including 225 cesarean sections. Compared to 2023, this represents an increase of 6% in total deliveries and 181% in cesarean sections, reflecting significant progress in access to healthcare services, particularly in the response to obstetric emergencies.
However, such a sharp rise in demand for care risks not being adequately matched by the supply side—for example, within the Maternity ward.
In light of this situation, Doctors with Africa CUAMM, with the support of Fondazione Pesenti, has made itself actively available to contribute to the effort to establish a School for the training of midwives near the Bossangoa Hospital, providing technical expertise in the field and drawing on similar successful experiences in other countries – such as the establishment and ongoing operation of the Midwifery Training School at Lui Hospital in South Sudan.
