Fondazione Pesenti supports Doctors with Africa CUAMM (Medici con l’Africa CUAMM)

Fondazione Pesenti supports Doctors with Africa CUAMM in the training activities of the Lui Midwifery School, located in Mundri East County, Western Equatoria State, South Sudan. This intervention takes place in a fragile context marked by extreme poverty, political instability, and scarce healthcare resources, where access to safe and qualified maternal and child care represents one of the main development challenges.

The Lui Hospital has been supported by Doctors with Africa CUAMM since 2009, in partnership with the local Diocese, which owns the facility, and with the Ministry of Health of South Sudan.

The Ministry recognizes the hospital’s strategic importance as the only health facility serving a population of over 170,000 people, and considers it an integral part of the national health system.

In 2013, efforts to rehabilitate the Midwifery School attached to the hospital began, culminating in the official inauguration of the facility in 2014.
The school offers a three-year diploma program to train qualified midwives capable of providing professional maternity care and reducing the risks associated with childbirth in one of the countries with the highest maternal and neonatal mortality rates in the world. Students follow a comprehensive educational path, which includes clinical experience in the hospital’s outpatient clinics and wards.

The first 20 students graduated in 2017. Following the completion of the second three-year cycle, the positive results achieved led the Ministry of Health to request the continuation of the training program for 22 new students.

Fondazione Pesenti’s contribution is aimed at supporting several key aspects necessary for the school’s operation:

• the availability of qualified teaching staff for both theoretical training and clinical internship supervision;

• the purchase and updating of teaching and IT materials used in the lessons;

• support for students’ stay, including food, accommodation, and essential services;

• coverage of operational costs required for the functioning of the facility.

Through this project, Fondazione Pesenti reaffirms its commitment to education and healthcare by contributing to the training of local professionals and promoting the right to health for the most vulnerable communities.
It is a tangible investment to strengthen South Sudan’s healthcare system and to offer real opportunities for growth, independence, and dignity to future generations.
