Medici con l’Africa Cuamm and the campaign “A vaccine for ‘us’”

Fondazione Pesenti supports the campaign “A vaccine for “‘us’”, organized and promoted by Medici con l’Africa Cuamm.

The intervention by Medici con l’Africa Cuamm supports local health services, which—already fragile before the pandemic—now risk collapse, and it works alongside them to help distribute vaccine doses from the capital to rural areas of the country.

At the core of the intervention is the figure of the healthcare worker, who must be protected and trained so they can continue to provide births, check-ups, and all essential health services to the community. They are doctors, nurses, midwives, and support staff. These people are the heart around which an entire country’s health system revolves. Cuamm’s commitment is to bring the vaccine, first and foremost, to them.

These are concrete actions: strengthening and organizing transportation, training personnel, and adapting and equipping facilities for vaccination.

CUAMM

Medici con l’Africa Cuamm is the first health-sector NGO recognized in Italy and the largest Italian organization dedicated to promoting and protecting the health of African populations.

Cuamm carries out long-term projects with a development-oriented approach. For this purpose, it is engaged in the training of human resources both in Italy and in Africa, scientific research and dissemination, and the affirmation of the fundamental human right to health for all.

Its two main goals are:

  • to improve health conditions in Africa, with the conviction that health is not a commodity, but a universal human right, and that access to healthcare must not be a privilege;
  • to promote a positive and supportive attitude toward Africa, meaning to help foster interest, hope, and commitment for the future of the continent among institutions and public opinion.
