Supporting LILT with Mammorisk

Fondazione Pesenti stands alongside LILT, at a time when the health emergency has often led to the postponement of essential screening measures.

Fondazione Pesenti and LILT – Lega Italiana per la Lotta contro i Tumori are partnering on the new Mammorisk project, a targeted breast cancer prevention pathway that estimates risk based on three main factors: family history, breast density, and salivary DNA analysis.

Based on these three criteria, the patient receives a graphical representation of her risk and a personalized diagnostic plan with a five-year calendar of breast exams, ultrasounds, and mammograms.

Personalized and Informed Prevention

The aim of the MammoRisk test is to help stratify the female population in order to plan a correct and personalized diagnostic path, with full awareness of one’s own risk. Specifically, it is a software tool that evaluates the individual five-year risk of developing breast cancer and enables the development of a personalized prevention plan.

The project was developed in collaboration with the Gustave Roussy Hospital in Paris and the Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium (BCSC) in the United States. MammoRisk uses an innovative risk-assessment model based on a data mining method, designed to determine the probability of developing breast cancer among women in the general population.

The MammoRisk score was developed and validated using the world’s largest breast cancer screening database:

  • 1 million women aged 40 to 74 years in the United States
  • 350,000 women aged 50 to 74 years in France

Through this initiative, LILT has embarked on a new journey toward redefining early cancer diagnosis.

LILT

Lega Italiana per la Lotta contro i Tumori – LILT is the only public body based on membership, headquartered in Rome and overseen by the Ministry of Health. It is structured into 106 provincial associations and operates as a non-profit organization. Its primary institutional mission is to promote the “culture of prevention” (primary, secondary, and tertiary) as a way of life.

LILT mainly engages in:
Primary prevention (lifestyle and habits: anti-smoking efforts, fighting environmental and occupational carcinogenesis, promoting healthy eating, and encouraging regular physical activity);
Secondary prevention (accelerated procedures for increasingly early diagnosis);
Tertiary prevention (caring for patients and supporting their physical, psychological, social, and occupational rehabilitation, as well as their families);
Scientific research.

The strengths of Lega Italiana per la Lotta contro i Tumori are represented by its approximately 400 clinics across the national territory and by its network of volunteers serving the community. Although the 106 Provincial LILT Associations are autonomous bodies, they pursue the above-mentioned goals in accordance with the guidelines and communications issued by LILT’s Central Office.
