From Bergamo to Oeversee (Germany) for a year abroad with Intercultura, supported by Fondazione Pesenti.
First Term: September – November 2018
My relationship with my host family:
I have a great relationship with everyone. They always include me in their activities and are very helpful, not just with the language but with everything else too. I’m especially getting close to the daughters, particularly the older one. The parents are incredibly kind and very friendly.
My relationship with the local community and friends:
I’ve gotten close to other exchange students in Flensburg, but I haven’t really connected much with German students. I haven’t met many people from the local community yet, but everyone I have met has been polite and kind.
My school experience – academic progress and personal relationships:
I get along well with my classmates at school, although I haven’t formed any real friendships yet. The subjects are quite similar to the ones in Italy, which helps. The teachers are generally willing to support me.
Extracurricular activities:
This week, I’m starting tennis lessons (twice a week). I often go walking or running in the area, and I’ve been exploring Flensburg.
Three things I’ll never forget (positive):
The charm of living in a seaside city.
My host family.
The value and importance of organization and order.
Three things I’ll never forget (negative, if any):
How indifferent my classmates were on the first day of school.
The general mistrust toward foreigners.
The emotional coldness of the people.
Other thoughts (anecdotes, reflections, takeaways):
