FONDAZIONE PESENTI FOR THE HUMANITARIAN EMERGENCY IN SYRIA

Update as of September 6, 2023

Humanitarian assistance in Syria for people affected by the earthquake

Thanks to the support of its donors, including Fondazione Pesenti ETS, UNHCR continues, together with its local partners, to provide assistance to the affected population, also aiming to ensure safe, voluntary, and dignified relocations as temporary shelters are closed.

Following the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria, Fondazione Pesenti ETS responded to the appeal launched by UNHCR – the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees – to provide concrete aid in Syria, where a severe humanitarian emergency has unfolded in the aftermath of the quake.

THE CONTEXT

As the Syrian crisis enters its 13th year, the scale, severity, and complexity of humanitarian needs across the country were already overwhelming before the earthquake. As of June 2023, over 15 million people were in urgent need of humanitarian assistance, with approximately 8.8 million people affected by the February earthquakes.

From the outset of the earthquake emergency, UNHCR and its partners, supported by local actors, have provided essential relief items and shelter support to thousands of vulnerable families residing in collective shelters and reception centers, as well as to those hosted by local communities. UNHCR has also provided psychosocial support, child protection services, legal assistance, and multipurpose cash aid.

FONDAZIONE PESENTI’S CONTRIBUTION

UNHCR’s presence and the results achieved in the context of the humanitarian crisis in Syria following the earthquake would undoubtedly have been more limited without the support of the Italian private sector. The contribution from the Pesenti Foundation has played a significant role in making the humanitarian response effective and appropriate to the needs on the ground.

Thanks to the €200,000.00 contribution allocated by the Pesenti Foundation, UNHCR was able to reach approximately 8,400 people in Syria with various forms of assistance: a warm coat for about 1,200 vulnerable individuals to help them cope with the harsh winter; a mattress for around 1,000 vulnerable people; a cash grant of $50 to approximately 360 families (averaging 4 members per family) to help cover essential expenses; a plastic tarp for about 1,000 families to protect their damaged homes; and a family tent for roughly 190 families whose homes were completely destroyed.
