The nonprofit association “Friends of Pediatrics” (Associazione Amici della Pediatria Onlus) was founded in 1990 at the Pediatrics unit of the Ospedali Riuniti di Bergamo, with the purpose of supporting and complementing public healthcare to improve care for sick children and support for their families.
The Papa Giovanni XXIII hospital in Bergamo, while being a nationally renowned and highly specialized hospital, is not affiliated with a university and therefore does not have resident medical trainees (specializzandi).
In this context, the initiative by Friends of Pediatrics was developed to fund Training Contracts for pediatric medical residents, aiming to bring the department to the level of teaching hospitals.
Residents are selected by the university and the head of the pediatrics unit and are integrated into the specialization program.
In 2014, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of its founding, Friends of Pediatrics established a SCHOLARSHIP FOR A PEDIATRIC MEDICAL RESIDENT lasting five years in memory of the founders Franca Natta Pesenti and Cesare Angelelli.
Franca Natta Pesenti, former honorary president of Friends of Pediatrics, always passionately and enthusiastically supported the scholarship project as a fundamental commitment to assist young graduates.
Cesare Angelelli, former hospital school teacher, later volunteer and president of the association, promoted this project in memory of his wife.
Fondazione Pesenti wanted to support this initiative in favor of young professionals entering the workforce with all its complexities and uncertainties. It is a concrete act of solidarity for the psycho-physical well-being of children and their families and for providing clinically and humanely attentive and qualified care.
