Milan, December 1, 2017 – Today, at La Triennale di Milano, the exhibition “Raphael and the Echo of the Myth” was presented . The exhibition will be held from January 27 at the GAMeC in Bergamo, with the participation of Giorgio Gori, Mayor of Bergamo, and Nadia Ghisalberti , Councillor for Culture.
Fondazione Pesenti supports this new project by the Fondazione Accademia Carrara Bergamo, realized in collaboration with GAMeC – Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Bergamo and co-produced with Electa/Marsilio.
Starting from the Saint Sebastian by Accademia Carrara, the exhibition — curated by M. Cristina Rodeschini, Emanuela Daffra, and Giacinto Di Pietrantonio — narrates the formation of the Urbino master, his activity, and his legacy.
Precious works by Raphael on loan from the most important museums worldwide, including the National Gallery in London, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin – Gemäldegalerie in Berlin, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow, and the State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, will dialogue with great masters from the 15th century to the present day.
More than twenty original works by Raphael, as well as works by Memling, Berruguete, Perugino, Pintoricchio, Signorelli, to name a few, rigorously reconstruct a spectacular high-profile cultural context, offering visitors an exciting journey that restores Raphael to the highest dimension of myth.
The exhibition path is completed by a selected body of 20th and 21st-century works by artists who have best inherited his legacy. The influence of the Urbino artist is found in the “d’après” works by Luigi Ontani, Salvo, and Francesco Vezzoli, in the strokes of Pablo Picasso, in the classical pictorial magic of Giorgio de Chirico and Antonio Donghi, in the celebratory figuration of Carlo Maria Mariani, and in the digital photographs of Mariella Bettineschi.
Furthermore, in the “wrapped” works of Christo, the female figures portrayed by Omar Galliani, the formal and enigmatic research of Pietro Roccasalva, and the works of three conceptual artists who will dialogue with Sanzio’s work in an excursus through the centuries: Ettore Spalletti, capable of embodying the universal intimacy that has traversed art history; Luciano Fabro, who evokes one of Raphael’s masterpieces; and Giulio Paolini, who presents a new work created precisely starting from Saint Sebastian.
