Virtuous Municipalities | Memory Forest

Fondazione Pesenti ETS supported the project “Virtuous Municipalities – Memory Forest” (Comuni Virtuosi – Bosco della Memoria).

This initiative was conceived to commemorate the victims of COVID-19 and to honor the tireless efforts of healthcare workers during the fight against the pandemic.

The planting of the first trees of the Memory Forest began on March 18, 2021, during the first National Day dedicated to the victims of the pandemic. This initiative stands as a meaningful and lasting tribute to those who lost their lives to COVID-19 and a recognition of the courage and dedication shown by healthcare workers during such a challenging time.

What we wanted was a living monument, a memorial that breathes and endures far beyond a human lifetime.
We wanted it in the largest park in the city, next to the Papa Giovanni XXIII Hospital,
where many lives were lost in recent months, but many more were saved.
This forest belongs to all of us, for all of us: a space to be lived in, shared, open.
And it’s deeply meaningful that the Memory Forest also stems from the contributions of so many people—
those who lost a relative, a friend, a loved one, or simply wished to express their closeness.
I thank them all, from the bottom of my heart, for choosing to be part of this, alongside the Municipality of Bergamo and the Association of Virtuous Municipalities.
