Humanitarian Emergency in Ukraine

Update as of July 28, 2022

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the individuals, companies, and associations that have supported and continue to support the Foundation in its effort to provide a concrete response to the current humanitarian emergency.

Sharing the widespread distress over the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Ukraine, Fondazione Pesenti responded to the Appeal to companies, foundations, and philanthropists launched by UNHCR.

UNHCR – The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees – is the leading global organization on the front lines, saving lives and protecting the rights of millions of refugees, displaced persons, and stateless people.

UNHCR has been operating in Ukraine since 1994, with six offices in various locations throughout the country and three warehouses for the storage of humanitarian goods. It has now strengthened operations in Ukraine and neighboring countries to support the affected populations. The overall impact of the situation is not yet clear, but it is evident that the crisis is of massive scale. Since February 24, more than 5.6 million refugees from Ukraine have been registered across Europe, and an estimated 7.1 million people are internally displaced within the country.

In line with the extraordinary commitment that characterized its activities over the past two years – alongside institutions on the front lines of the pandemic emergency – Fondazione Pesenti has made a significant donation and launched a fundraising campaign. This effort involved and facilitated the participation of Italmobiliare and its group’s portfolio companies, resulting in a total amount that has exceeded €380,000.00 to date. The initiative has so far involved 170 employees and 20 companies.

The most significant contribution – amounting to €300,000.00 – was donated to UNHCR, following coordination with the UN High Commissioner, to provide tangible aid to the relevant and hardest-hit areas.

Smaller but impactful contributions for the Ukrainian emergency were also made to associations such as the Italian Red Cross (Palazzolo sull’Oglio Committee) for a total of €2,000.00, and to the Fiorenzo Fratini Foundation for a total of €10,000.00. The Fiorenzo Fratini Foundation collected and shipped essential supplies such as water, blankets, disinfectants, first aid items, etc., initially to the Polish border and then to Lviv, from where they were distributed to nearby cities. Special attention was given to children, among the most affected victims of the conflict. Hygiene products and food items were sent, including baby food, pasta, rice, and biscuits.

An additional €20,000.00 was raised in support of Polska Akcja Humanitarna (Polish Humanitarian Action), which has been active in Ukraine since 2014 and has maintained a permanent mission there since 2015. The organization responded immediately to the crisis by providing medical aid, distributing food baskets, hygiene kits, blankets, sleeping bags, and other essential supplies. Their top priority has been supporting the most vulnerable groups: the elderly, women, and children, which they reach through long-established local partnerships. They currently offer legal, social, and professional counseling, vocational training courses, open sessions on entrepreneurship, and psychological support, both at their information center and through field outreach. Their efforts also focus on the renovation of water and sanitation infrastructure in public places (mainly hospitals and schools serving children or the elderly). Monthly subsidies help families purchase food, warm clothing, and other necessities tailored to their specific needs.

Another notable contribution of €33,146.00 was collected for Caritas Bergamasca to support emergency and humanitarian assistance operations, including the provision of essential goods to local church and humanitarian organizations and to Caritas entities in neighboring countries assisting refugees.

Finally, Fondazione Pesenti donated €10,000.00 as part of the fundraising event “Dinner With Us” promoted by Vidas, which supported the Casa Sollievo and the initiatives of the Ukrainian Association of Children’s Palliative Care.
