A reflection on art in the light of psychoanalysis, recalling the bold wager at the heart of contemporary painting: is it possible to depict the undepictable, to give a face to the absolute? A work of art awakens us from the sleep of ordinary reality and confronts us with “the mystery of things.” Art is not an escape or a refuge from the real—marked by life and death—but rather a fascinating possibility to encounter its otherness.

Massimo Recalcati is one of the most renowned Italian psychoanalysts. His work has become a stable and recognized point of reference in the field. In his essays, he explores and analyzes the mechanisms of the psyche, the ferment of social and political life, mass phenomena, transformations in the contemporary world, and the evolving relationship between fathers and children.
