It has been fifty years since the passing of Don Milani. The prior of Barbiana died on June 26, 1967, four months before the trial for glorifying a crime brought against him by some military officers. Unable to attend the hearings due to cancer, Don Milani decided to send the court a defense statement that has gone down in history as the “Letter to the Judges”, in which he reaffirmed that when laws are unjust, one must fight to change them, and it is the duty of every citizen to intervene when principles of justice, freedom, and truth are not respected.

Lella Costa is one of Italy’s most beloved playwrights and actresses. Her career, marked by strong civic commitment, has brought her to the main Italian theater stages. She said: “Don Milani does not settle for stating a principle. Many do that already. He doesn’t — he forces you to take responsibility and be consistent. His words about war are very firm: this is also a great lesson. Ethics are not rules or little rules, but a few steadfast and non-negotiable principles.”
