Yesterday, at the Fondazione Corriere della Sera, the live streaming of the meeting titled “What will become of welfare?” took place, featuring Piergaetano Marchetti President of Fondazione Corriere della Sera | Carlo Pesenti President of Fondazione Pesenti | Elsa Fornero Economist, University of Turin, former Minister of Labour | Alessandra Ghisleri Director Euromedia Research | Claudia Parzani European Managing Partner, Linklaters | moderator Nicola Saldutti Head of Economics Corriere della Sera.
“What will become of welfare?” A blunt question in the post-Covid era, with implications ranging from the organization of the labor market to the future of pension systems. Three highly authoritative observers with great experience in these topics discussed it, taking on the challenge of questioning what the future of welfare might be, given the problems identified in recent years and dramatically revealed by the spread of the pandemic.
The meeting, broadcast from the Sala Buzzati of the Fondazione Corriere, was opened by President Piergaetano Marchetti, who introduced the crucial themes of the debate and recalled the now well-established collaboration between the two Foundations.

“The topics related to pensions are among the most read on the Corriere website,” Nicola Saldutti, Head of Economics Corriere della Sera, recalled, questioning the speakers about public perception and the growing need for security and guarantees for the future from individuals and companies.

“The very definition of welfare is not well known by a significant portion of the sample,” replied Alessandra Ghisleri, Director Euromedia Research, who brought to the center of the debate the fear that has pervaded recent months and emphasized the elements of clarity that are necessary.

“We are in a country where there are too many excluded people,” Claudia Parzani, European Managing Partner, Linklaters, warned. “Gender issues are important, the numbers show it. The keywords that are clearly emerging in business dynamics are security and time, and then there are young people. But we must truly believe in it.”

“I strongly believe in the value of education, instruction, investment, and civil dialogue. Let us try to be serious and coherent. We have all the resources to succeed,” concluded Elsa Fornero, Economist, University of Turin, former Minister of Labour, with a positive look toward the future.

The event, streamed live, was promoted by Fondazione Pesenti in collaboration with Fondazione Corriere.
Conferences are one of the main “public” moments of Fondazione Pesenti, which have seen the participation of the most authoritative representatives from academia, institutions, the media, and civil society (from Nobel Prize winners in economics Stiglitz and Spence, to the former governor of the Indian Central Bank Raghuram Rajan, to figures from civil society). Since 2018, Fondazione Pesenti has established a prestigious partnership with Fondazione Corriere, aimed at promoting with increasing effectiveness and to a broader audience (not only geographically) the topical issues proposed.
