Bergamo, January 19, 2013 – Les embarras de la souveraineté:  will the current severe economic crisis push European partners to make community institutions more effective? This was the starting point for the annual conference of the Fondazione Cav. Lav. Carlo Pesenti, held on Saturday, January 19 in Bergamo.
The topic of the debate was inspired by the words of Jacques Delors, then President of the European Commission, who back in 1988 seemed to describe, with his words on Les embarras de la souveraineté, political-institutional conditions that remain very relevant today, with Europe still struggling to develop and implement the necessary tools and measures to decisively face the most serious post-war economic crisis.

The discussion, enriched by analyses and data provided by ISTAT President Enrico Giovannini and Ipsos President Nando Pagnoncelli, saw the participation of some of the leading figures and observers from academia, economics, and institutions.

From the Minister for European Affairs Enzo Moavero Milanesi, to economists Luigi Zingales (included in the Top 100 Global Thinkers 2012 by the American magazine Foreign Policy), Hans-Werner Sinn (one of the authors of the open letter to Chancellor Merkel on direct aid from the bailout fund), and Ramon Marimon (professor at the European University Institute, funded by 20 Member States, and former Secretary of State of the Spanish government), to entrepreneur and former Vice President of Confindustria for Europe Andrea Moltrasio. The debate was animated by Mario Calabresi, director of La Stampa.  Mario Calabresi.
